I bought a 1999 xc 70 and the previous owner removed the drive shaft presumably for better gas mileage, dumb I know. What should I check before attempting to buy parts and bring it back to awd. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.

The PO may have removed the rear drive mechanism due to problems with the angle/bevel gear.

The fix depends on which transaxle your car has - auto or manual - as the parts differ accordingly...

If the rear diff is ok and the transaxle is healthy the next decision would be OE vs salvage on the shaft.

Here is a brief but interesting and relevant discussion in reverse...

Good luck and keep us updated on progress.

Thanks.
