Volvo Scenic Drive ROUTE April 9, 2016, Columbus, Texas (36 miles).

Please observe all traffic laws and avoid overtaking if possible.

Depart Columbus Walmart parking lot onto right lane of northbound Business TX-71 using exit drive south of Jack-in-the-Box.

EDIT - added refined directions...

NOTE: Be sure to get a copy of the map and driving instructions.

To avoid the need for a formal parade permit we will depart the parking area individually by driving east of (behind) and south of the Jack-in-the-Box and use their entrance/exit drive to turn RIGHT (north) onto Business (Texas) Highway 71 (Fannin Street) which requires carefully crossing the single northbound lane of Milam Street.

We will then proceed north on Business 71 intermingled with the local traffic for about 2 miles (crossing the Colorado River bridge) and once passed the intersection with FM 109 we will pause (safely) on the right shoulder of Business 71 just long enough to snuggle up as a gaggle of Volvos (in any order) then continue the march led by Anna in her ’91 Volvo 244.

End of EDIT.

Drive northwest on Business TX-71 to TX 71 (4.2 miles).

Drive northwest on TX-71 to FM 2503 in Ellinger, Texas (10 miles).

Turn right (northeast) on FM 2503 and go one block to Jarmon St.

Turn left (northwest) on Jarmon St. and go one block to Grover St.

Assemble in Hruska’s gravel parking lot at Grover and Jarmon streets.

Attack Hruska’s en masse and buy out the bakery (Kolach!).

Reassemble. Your Volvo is now no longer clean and shiny.

Drive southeast one block on Jarmon St. to FM 2503.

Drive northeast (turn left) on FM 2503 to FM 1291 (6 miles).

Drive east (turn right) on FM 1291 to FM 109 in Frelsburg, TX (7 miles).

Drive south on FM 109 to Zimmerscheidt Road (3 miles).

Note: Zimmerscheidt is an old family name “separate bedrooms”.

Drive east on Zimmerscheidt Road to Mossy Oaks Lane (5 miles).

Turn right (southwest) onto Mossy Oaks Lane at “Volvo” gate.

Follow the signs to the Volvo meeting at Fågelsång/ Vålvosång.

Note: Mossy Oaks Lane is not paved and speed limit is 10mph.

A copy of the map and these directions will be provided to each participant.

UPDATE!

Today is Tuesday, March 29, 2016.

Just ten days ‘til the really big Volvo car get-together in Columbus, Texas, so here are some details and FAAs (frequently asked answers).

First and foremost – is your grandkid’s soccer game more important than a Volvo meet?

YES!!!

This meet is a “Go” rain or shine and your sparkling Volvo will get dirty!

Although Volvos never die, should you experience car problems call Roadside Assistance. If it is just a no-start on your twin-carb B18 call me – George Dill 254-541-2199.

My Friday night digs are at the Holiday Inn Express & Sweats in Columbus. I cancelled my room at the Weimar Motel once I discovered that the new owners ran an escort service in Houston.

If you are in the area Friday evening join us for a very informal dinner at Schobels any time. Just ask for the Volvo crowd or call me.

Another source of information and assistance would be George McDonald – 713-five-0-three-forty-seven-oh-8.

Although the meet is scheduled to start at 9am Saturday don’t be concerned about arriving too early or too late – just arrive safely!

If you arrive in Columbus on Saturday already hungry just enter the paved Volvo Parking Only area west of the Wal-Mart parking lot and north of Jack-in-the-Box using the drive entrance at Milam Street and Shult Drive. Once you get your new 2017 Volvo XC90 secure stroll across Milam to Schobels for a home-cooked meal be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Yummy!

We don’t have a formal Saturday lunch reservation set up at Schobels – just go eat when you are hungry!

About 1pm or sooner we will roll out for the Volvo Scenic Drive.

In less than 2 miles we hook up with the main Texas Highway 71 northwest for a quick 10-mile spin to Hruska’s Store and Bakery in the fine city of Ellinger, Texas.

Hruska’s will be your last chance to stock up snacks and drinks for the long afternoon at Volvosang.

Did I mention that Hruska’s has clean restrooms?

SEE Y’ALL IN COLUMBUS!

UPDATE #2!

Today is Thursday, March 31, 2016.

Good news!

Just spoke with George McDonald of Houston, Texas.

He has been out to Volvosang to visit with Nils and they decided to burn some beef and beans for a late afternoon snack at the get-together April 9 - please pass the cornbread!

Also, seems like the world is shopping to buy a Volvo 122S just like Dad had or just like the one that got away forty years back. Tom Smith of Graham, Texas, will be at the meet looking for a coupe and David McKee is also hunting but can't make the gathering.

If y'all have some leads holler up - volvotexasdill at lycos dot com

While you are spooning in the beans be ready for the Volvo Trivia Quiz - 10 questions with definitive answers and you can use your dumb phone/go ogle.

The first person to get all 10 correct answers goes home with an extra $50!

Sample: In 1963 Richard Gordon and a partner started ipd. What is/was the partner's name?

As usual, we are seeking an enthusiastic individual to plan, organize and hustle the next meet in October 2016 - you?

Anybody got a spare 122 headlight trim ring?

From my email...

Subject: 122s headlight trim ring

Hello sir!

I met you at the marble falls Volvo meet, and I intend to attend the one next weekend as well.

I lost a headlight trim ring on the road today which promptly got run over by the car behind me. Would you by chance have a spare you could sell me?

Robert
